✦ Synopsis
relative risk 1.65). Polyunsaturated fatty acids were not associated with an increased risk of recurrence, but the relative risk of mortality was increased to 1.84. All associations between dietary fat and recurrence and survival were attenuated following energy adjustment. Besides selected patient characteristics, particularly disease stage, a higher intake of energy, and all types of fatty acids appear to increase risk of recurrence and/or shortened survival following the diagnosis of breast cancer.
In conclusion, the new epidemiological studies which appeared in the past 16 months gave no support to the hypothesis that a high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids increases the risk for breast cancer.
