The chemistry of nitrene intermediates, which e.re generally obtained by a loss of nitrogen from an azide, has been the subject of considerable interest in recent years (1). The present report describes the thermolytic decompositions of 4-amino3azido-s-triazoles to yield 3-amino-i-tetrazines. This decomposition reaction is a convenient route for the synthesis of 3amino-s-tetrazines whose usual methods of preparation have inherent limitations.
