✦ Synopsis

The reaction of -(N-t-butoxycarbonyl)amino-,-ethylenic esters with OsO 4 yields the corresponding ,-dihydroxy compounds with good diastereoselectivity. The crystal structure of the major stereomer, (2SR,3SR,4RS)-Me 2 CHC\forcelb]H(NHCO 2 t Bu)CHOHCHOHCO 2 t Bu, C 16 H 31 NO 6 , shows that the relative stereochemistry of the CHO±CHO± CHN sequence is anti±syn.

The title norcaradienes have been synthesized by low temperature photolysis and the activation parameters for their isomerization to cycloheptatrienes determined.
