✦ Synopsis
The title compound, C 17 H 15 NO 4 ÁH 2 O, derived from dltyrosine crystallizes as an unusual hydrogen-bonded acidmonohydrate dimer. The asymmetric unit contains two organic molecules and two water molecules. Dimers link through (aryl)O-HÁ Á ÁO C hydrogen bonds along the [101] direction, forming a one-dimensional chain of rings, and further associated via inversion centres (forming a chain of rings aligned in the opposite direction) generating columns. Ruffled sheets arise from interlocking of isoindole rings via -(arene) stacking and C-HÁ Á Á(arene) interactions; C-HÁ Á ÁO interactions generate a three-dimensional network.

In the crystal structure of the title compound, C 15 H 16 N 2 O 3 , N-HÁ Á ÁO and O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds link the molecules into a three-dimensional network, in which they may be effective in the stabilization of the crystal structure.
The title compound, C 11 H 9 NO 4 , was synthesized by mixing phthalic anhydride and (S)-2-aminopropanoic acid in acetic acid. The dihedral angle between the phthalimide ring system and the O3/O4/C9/C11 plane is 86.7 (3) . The crystal structure is stabilized by weak O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds.
