The geometric parameters of the molecule of the title compound, C 18 H 11 Cl 2 NO, a chalcone derivative, are in the usual ranges. The central C C double bond is trans configured. The dihedral angle between the two aromatic residues is 41.90 (8) .

The title compound, C~21~H~14~Cl~2~O, was prepared from biphenyl-4-carbaldehyde and 2,4-dichloroacetophenone. Single crystals were obtained from acetone. The compound crystallizes with four molecules in the asymmetric unit, all of which deviate significantly from planarity.
