Abstr anthracene chars heat treated between 500 and 1200ยฐC is developped and applied to d.c. electrical conductivity, paramagnetic susceptibility and apparent density. An inhomogeneous process for the carbonization is proposed, in agreement with recent results on the structure of these chars. acts 3

sive wrinkling and corrugation. A disclination model seems to apply to the core of round filaments, the transitions from round to cracked structures imply disclination interactions along the length of the filament. 236. The textile prestretching of PAN-fibres as a controlling parameter for the mechanical properties of the resulting carbon-fibres E. Fitzer and Th. Muller (Inslitut fur Chemische Technik, Universitiit Karlsruhe, BRD). PAN-fibres, obtained from two different sources, having different polymer composition and textile stretch, were oxidized in air at 230ยฐC for optimum time and subsequently carbonized. The influence of textile stretching on the necessary stabilization conditions and on the mechanical properties of the resulting carbon fibres are discussed.

Abst~ct-3oron-doped carbons were prepared at temperatures from 1000 to 28CWC. The effect of boron doping on the thermal conductivity of carbons has been studied and discussed with the results from Raman scattering. Boron doping above 2200ยฐC depressed the thermal conductivity of carbons and increased
This paper reports the Raman spectra, obtained by using an excitation laser at 1064 nm, of carbon-based materials characterised by different microstructural properties and structural perfection. The use of a NIR excitation evidences new aspects of Raman activity in carbons. The Ezg mode at 1582 cm-'
The Raman spectrum of Graphon carbon black has been recorded using rotating cell techniques. Angular dependence of scattering at 1360, 1580 and 2700 cm ' are reported and these data suggest that the 1360 cm -. i line is associated with non-planar microstructure distortions. The excitation frequency
