✦ Synopsis
ment-based approach to emergency care into the new curriculum will necessitate the rewriting of standard texts.
Likewise, these texts will need restructuring if the EMT-I certification level becomes obsolete. As indicated above, many of the EMT-I skills (eg, some form of advanced airway management, defibrillation, some IV lines) are being proposed as additions to the basic EMT curriculum. Also, there is a push to simplify EMS systems. Some states have as many as three levels of technician certification between the basic EMT and paramedic. Excepting EMTdefibrillation, it has not been shown that these extra certification levels make any difference in patient outcome.
