Accident and Emergency Radiology: A Survival Guide, is a 341page, densely packed book that can easily fit into the pocket of one's white coat. Chapters are organized anatomically, with nearly every page containing helpful radiographs or illustrations of normal and abnormal findings. The writing is simple, concise, and focused, making for an easy read.

Each chapter generally begins with an overview of pertinent anatomy using radiographs and pictorials. Normal variants are often included as well. Radiographs depicting common injuries in that anatomical region are shown, as well as common pitfalls encountered in interpreting such radiographs. Well-organized tables highlight and reinforce crucial information garnered in each chapter.

Particularly useful was the chapter on cervical spine radiographs. After reading this 25-page chapter, I was significantly more comfortable with such injuries. I was more confident my very next shift when assessing such patients. In fact, with few exceptions, as I read each chapter I believed that I had elicited a pearl or two that would help me immediately in the ED. I credit the authors for their well-organized approach and for eliminating superfluous details, making this an easy read with important details appropriately reinforced.

Shortcomings of the text are few. The chapter on chest radiography is a bit disappointing. At 24 pages long, this chapter is shorter than that devoted to evaluating the near-obsolete skull radiographs.
