Pablo Neruda dejó al morir ocho libros inéditos de poesía, escritos casi simultáneamente: La rosa separada, Jardín de invierno, 2000, El corazón amarillo, Libro de las preguntas, Elegía, El mar y las campanas, Defectos escogidos. «Piedad para estos siglos y sus sobrevivientes / alegres o maltrechos, lo que no hicimos / fue por culpa de nadie, faltó acero: / lo gastamos en tanta inútil destrucción». Así comienza 2000, donde encontramos la mejor voz del poeta: tendida hacia el futuro, nutriéndose de la historia, pero angustiada, conmovida y esperanzada a la vez ante nuestro tiempo presente.
