✦ Synopsis


The reaction of carbon dioxide with pyrolysed polymer carbons has been studied in the temperature range 750-850Β°C and in the pressure range 1-12 cm Hg. The kinetics have been followed gravimetrically using a sensitive torsion microbalance. A static system was used throughout. The carbons have been characterised by electron microscopy, electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and physical adsorption techniques. For carbon prepared from polyvinyl chloride and graphitised at 25OO"C, an activation energy of 85 kcal/mole was observed for the overall reaction. Various reaction schemes were considered, in order to explain the experimental observations and the appropriate kinetic constants were evaluated. Further observations have been made on the same carbon, after 40% oxidation in air at 1000Β°C. In this case a value of 69 kcal/mole was found for the activation energy. The reactivity of carbon prepared from polyvinylidene chloride and graphitised at 25OO"C, was also studied and an activation energy of 87 kcalimole was found for the reaction.
