✦ Synopsis


The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) had its 20th International Congress on Irrigation and Drainage in October 2008 at Lahore, Pakistan. In line with the theme above, specific responses to questions were invited to cover a few topics on: Sustainable Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Knowledge Base, Information Management and Dissemination of Research in developing countries 2Design and operation of irrigation systems for use of treated and partially treated wastewater, saline water or soils -the limitations and opportunities Conjunctive operation of storage reservoirs for multi-purposes Experiences of the impacts of climate changes on water resources Mineral tolerant plants in waterlogged and saline lands Role of Public and Private Sectors in Water Management Performance of irrigation and drainage systems after modernization/privatization Socio-economic aspects of agriculture production in developing countries Technical, technological, economic and legal aspects of management and the use of the water resources of trans-boundary (interstate) rivers.

A fair coverage of all areas which can impact IWRM helped an assessment of the opportunities and bottlenecks in its implementation. Key recommendations emerging out of the Congress transactions were read out as 'The Lahore Declaration' at the closing ceremony.
