✦ Synopsis

U(N) symmetric three-dimensional (I$')~ theory is studied in the l/N expansion, using quantum field theory techniques. An effective action containing the composite operator +2 is used. It is shown to be renormalizable in each order of the l/N expansion. The lirst two orders are considered. A vacuum instability as well as logarithmic corrections to scaling relations at the tricritical point are discussed. 8 ' 1985 Academtc Press, Inc.
