โฆ Synopsis
The latter publication considers characterization in a broad sense since it covers much more than the usual instrumental characterization. Thus, there is a long section on Catalytic Properties which includes subheadings: reactor types and measurement methods, kinetic analysis, inhibition of catalytic action, deactivation of catalysts and time-dependent effects, and regeneration. In turn, each of these subheadings contains a number of subsections.
Another paper that merits consideration is entitled 'Symbolism and Terminology in Chemical Kinetics ' [Pure & Appl. Chem., 53 (1981) 753-771]. This paper was prepared for publication by Professor Keith J. Laidler (one member of a committee that also included E. T. Denisov, K. H. Homann and T. M. Sugden). Nearly all of us violate the first suggestion that early letters of the alphabet be used for reactants and latter letters for products; this will eliminate classic reactions such as Ac~B~C.
The authors do recognize this problem and state that "if we were starting afresh, we might prefer to recommend differently". This group provided a definition of catalysis.
Heterogeneous catalysis and enzyme catalysis were not dealt with explicitly in this report; these topics are covered in earlier reports [Definitions, Terminology and Symbols in Colloid and Surface Chemistry, in two parts: Part I is published in Pure &Appl. Chem., 31 (1972) 577, and Part II (Heterogeneous Catalysis) in (Pure & Appl. Chem., 46 (1976) 71 and in 'Symbols of Enzyme Kinetics', Chapter 5 of Enzyme Nomenclature, IUPAC-IUB Corn-
