✦ Synopsis

An annud directory of companies that supply mass spectrometers and mass spectrometry components and Services.

The intent of this directory is to provide a concise, up-todate and complete listing of companies which provide mass spectrometrists with the tools of their trade. The directory continues to grow in size compared with previous years'-' and contains 117 entries this year. Consistent with the evolving nature of the directory, new information has been added (where available) in the form of electronic mail and World Wide Web addresses.

Mergers and acquisitions as well as the birth of new companies continue to provide the impetus for the annual modifications. Some of these changes are highlighted below. Although the reorganization of Fisons/VG was not fully finalized at the time of publishing, it has been announced that VG Analytical, VG Biotech and VG Isotech will separate from Fisons and form a new company called Micromass. Extrel Corporation's mass spectrometry has now been acquired by two separate companies. The quadrupole business now belongs to ABB Process Analytics while the FTMS busines goes to Finnigan-MAT (Thermo). Time-of-flight mass spectrometry continues to be the genesis of new companies, the most recent additions to the directory being Leco and Ionwerks. Hewlett-Packard has entered the ion trap arena by marketing the Bruker-Franzen ESQUIRE'^ ion-trap mass spectrometer in the US. Finally, Analytical Solutions, Inc. is a new company which provides mass speckometry training. This company was formed as a result of the closing of the Finnigan-MAT Institute in Cincinnati, OH.

SCOPE

This directory provides a listing of those companies that supply instruments or hardware components and services which are specific to mass spectrometry. The scope of the directory is currently limited to exclude manufacturers of general vacuum components, contract analysis laboratories and companies that solely provide instrument service and repair. A unique, two-letter code has been established for each company. This code is then referenced in one or more of four tables. Table 1 lists, by code, those companies that manufacture or supply complete mass spectrometer systems for general analysis and cross-references the main analyzer type with a variety of available ion sources and inlets. Table 2 lists companies that manufacture complete instruments that have a specific or unique application. Table 3 catalogs companies that provide major mass spectrometry components. In order to be included in this table, the company must provide the component for more than one brand of mass spectrometer. Finally in Table 4, companies are listed that provide a special hardware-oriented service. The address directory containing the listing of the companies and their codes follows the tables. The listing is roughly alphabetical by the two letter code and company name, although due to the evolving nature of the directory, there are exceptions. The first column in the company directory generally lists the company headquarters or primary contact address and phone numbers. The second and third columns provide, if available, other regional contact information. An attempt was made to provide (in no fixed order) contact addresses for three regions: North America, Europe and the Pacific Rim.

In order for the directory to reflect the most current and accurate state of the mass spectrometry instrumentation business, continued changes to both the content and organization of this directory will be needed. It is hoped that both the users of this directory and the companies listed will continue to provide suggestions for improvement or expansion, as well as corrections and updates.
