✦ Synopsis

Professor Novotny has contributed significantly in pioneering work in capillary chromatography and electrophoresis (reflected in well over 200 publications). From 1965 to 1968 he began work on glass capillary columns in Brno. Later his studies on the surface chemistry of glass were continued in Stockholm and Houston; this and parallel work in several other laboratories provided the foundation for the growth of capillary GC in the following decade. He was one of the first to show applications to biological compounds. In 1969 Dr. Novotny showed a very successful coupling of capillary GC to Mass Spectrometry.

Gradually he shifted his attention to larger and less volatile compounds and became more and more interested in liquid chromatographic and electrophoretic methods. Since 1975 Milos Novotny and his research group developed columns and instrumentation for miniaturized LC.

The development of capillary SFC, together with Dr. Milton Lee, meant a revival of supercritical fluid chromatography. He encouraged his former student Dr. James Jorgenson in further developing capillary zone electrophoresis, now a very promising method in the analysis of biological macromolecules.

His direct scientific work is paralleled by a substantial impact on educating leaders in the field of separation science. Among his former graduate students and research associates are Professors
