Six mois après la défaite de 1940 et le début de l'occupation, les habitants de Villeneuve s'extraient de leur torpeur. Beaucoup se rassurent en pensant que la présence des Allemands n'est que provisoire. Mais certains en doutent et prennent petit à petit conscience de la nécessité de résister. Dans toute la population, et jusque dans les couples, qu'ils soient légitimes ou illégitimes, l'écart se creuse entre ceux qui ne veulent pas voir la brutalité du régime nazi, l'ostracisme de plus en plus violent qu'il manifeste à l'égard des Juifs, et ceux qui s'accommodent, voire qui décident de collaborer.
