the ground state wave function is doubly degenerate 1). This result is suprising, partly, because it conflicts with the tacit or explicit assumption of the existing quantum mechanical theories, partly because the rigorous arguments of traditional thermodynamics do not lead to such quantum mechanical statements. The conclusion in question was reached from a new axiomatization of thermodynamics. A characteristic aspect of this approach is that the choice of axioms is flexible and allows to deal rigorously with questions of increasing incisiveness. In addition to the thermostatics of phase equilibrium, the theory is now developed on statistical hnes. 1)

After a discussion of the experiments which have led to the idea that a film is formed on surfaces in contact with liquid helium II, further experiments on the anomalous evaporation from vessels containing liquid helium II are described. It is concluded from the experiments that liquid helium II "cr
