โœฆ Synopsis


The behavior of iodine in a highpurity graphite (National Carbon TSX) and a reimpregnated graphite (Graphite Specialties, R-4) has been studied over the temperature range 25-800ยฐC. The quantities of iodine on the graphite were measured directly by means of a tracer technique utilizing Ilsl and a scintillation scanning probe. The effect of outgassing at 200, 900, and 2000ยฐC on the iodine adsorption was determined. The results indicate that iodine on the graphite is both physically adsorbed and chemisorbed at 100ยฐC and above. It was found that the 100ยฐC isotherms give surface areas the same as those obtained with nitrogen at -195ยฐC. At 25ยฐC iodine forms residue compounds with the graphite which cannot be decomposed on heating to 900ยฐC in vacuum. Some results of dectricaf property measurements on the residue compounds will be presented.
