✦ Synopsis

The breakdown of carbon powders has been examined in an air-driven fluid energy mill at ambient temperature. The resulta show that synthetic graphites are most resistant to breakdown and natural graphites least resistant. The behaviour of cokes shows that they are less consistent ss a group and on the whole less resistant to breakdown than the synthetic graphites. Repeated passes through the mill produced progressively less comminution, suggesting that 'there is an asymptotic value for the ultimate mean particle size. Behaviour of the material in the mill is compared with behaviour under other stress conditions.
