✦ Synopsis
NRZ format is about 0.3 dB higher than that of RZ, while at 60 ps DGD, the improvement is even greater: the eye closure penalty of the NRZ format is about 1.2 dB higher than that of RZ. The results indicate that the RZ format has much better transmission performance in terms of PMD tolerance compared with that of the NRZ format. For lower DGD values, both the RZ and NRZ formats show a slight negative eye closure penalty. The causes of this negative eye closure penalty are still under investigation. For the RZ format, it is probably partly due to the nonoptimized electrical filter bandwidth.
CONCLUSION
In summary, the transmission system penalty of RZ and NRZ modulation formats due to polarization-mode dispersion Ž . Ž . PMD in a 375 km 5 = 25 dB dispersion-managed optically amplified system is studied. The RZ format shows a higher tolerance to PMD degradation than the NRZ format at higher PMD values.
