✦ Synopsis

T h e nuclei 233U, 235U, 238U, 2S7Np a n d 239pu h a v e been b o m b a r d e d w i t h c h a r g e d particles from a V a n de Graafl generator, y-rays arising f r o m t h e decay of r o t a t i o n a l s t a t e s excited b y t h e Coulomb i n t e r a c t i o n were observed w i t h p r o p o r t i o n a l a n d scintillation counters. T h e relative intensities of t h e various t r a n s i t i o n s show fair agreem e n t w i t h those expected on t h e basis of t h e unified model. T h e m e a n values of Qo, in u n i t s of 10 -24 cm 2, for t h e five nuclei are 14.2, 10. I, 9.5, 12 a n d 8.5, respectively.

T h e results for 289Pu a n d 235U suggest t h a t there should be a low lying m e t a s t a b l e s t a t e in 23sU.
