## Abstract The ^13^C n.m.r. spectra of 36 naturally occurring xanthones are reported and all chemical shifts assigned. The shifts in substituted xanthones can be predicted from substituent effects evaluated for simple derivatives. The agreement between calculated and observed shifts decreases as t

✦ Synopsis
13C n.m.r. spectroscopy has been applied to investigate a number of coal tar and petroleum-derived carbon blackfeedstocks. Application of the J-modulated spin echo technique is especially rewarding, as this method renders the quaternary carbons directly detectable. Thus the quality of carbon black feedstocks can additionally be gauged on the basis of the contents of quaternary carbons, which is a direct indication of the carbon yield in the carbon black production process.

## Abstract ^15^N chemical shifts, ^1^__J__(NN), ^1^__J__(NC) and ^2^__J__(NC) coupling constants have been used to prove the open chain structure and configuration of __cis__‐ and __trans__‐2,3‐diphenyl‐1‐phthalimidoazimines. For comparison, the corresponding data of the iso‐π‐electronic __cis__‐
Solvent-refined lignite (SRL) and bituminous coals (SRC) are only partially soluble in good standard carbon-13 n.m.r. solvents. A survey of other possible solvents for SRLs and SRCs showed thatsymtriazine at 86°C solvated SR L as well as pyridine, but did not absorb in the regions of interest (5-60
