β¦ Synopsis
Various surface complexes were adsorbed on coconut-shell steam activated carbons. The surface area changes were studied in conditions where reversion of the surface by exposure to air was not possible. The exposure to other chemical environments was compared to results where atmospheric reversion had taken place. 129. Copper sphere development in carhonked viscose rayon containing CuClz A. Capon, J. M. Creasey and R. A. Cox (Chemical Defence Establishment, Porton Down, Salisbury, Wilts, England). On carbonisation CuCI, treated viscose rayon produces 0.1-1.0 p diameter copper spheres on the fibril surfaces. During activation these spheres penetrate the carbon structure. Investigations by SEM and DTA show that sphere formation is complex, involving initially surface crystallite formation, then decomposition giving copper containing whiskers and finally spheres.
