Á2ClO 4 À Á2Cl À Á2CH 3 OH, crystallizes with the main molecule situated on a center of inversion. The ions are connected by intermolecular O-HÁ Á ÁO, N-HÁ Á ÁO and N-HÁ Á ÁCl hydrogen bonds.
The title compound, C 11 H 10 N 2 O 4 , was synthesized from benzimidazole and chloroacetic acid. In the crystal structure, O-HÁ Á ÁO hydrogen bonds lead to the formation of extended one-dimensional chains along the [101] direction.

ÁBr À ÁH 2 O, was determined at 150 K. It is a supramolecular adduct of imidazolium bromide and water molecules. Helical chains of (H 2 OÁBr À ) exist in the structure along the [001] direction. Each chain forms extensive hydrogen bonds with the imidazolium cations.
