✦ Synopsis

On treatment with 0,05 N HC1 in aqueous ethanol both 1,19-isopropylidenouabagenin (11) and ouabagenin (111) yield two new dehydration products, namely monoanhydro-ouabagenin and tetraanhydro-ouabagenin, in the ratio of 1 : 10. Monoanhydro-ouabagenin is proven to possess the structure of l u , lla-oxido-strophanthidol (V) ; accordingly the structure VII is assigned to the tetraanhydro derivative. The la,lla-epoxide group is a characteristic feature for both being novel for the cardenolide series.
