116. Measurement of circularly polarized gamma-radiation following polarized neutron capture

SCATTERING AND POLARIZATION 1 181 2. the total cross-section for neutrons 3. polarization of neutrons in the range 0 ° ~ 0 K 3 °, due to interaction of neutron magnetic moment with electrical field of the nucleus.

Calculations were made for neutron energies of 1 to 5 MeV for a variety of parameters (r 0 -the nuclear radius, /~-absorption constant, 2a-radius of diffuse edge of the nucleus) r0 = 7.0 × I 0 -13 cm; 7.5 × 10-13 cm; 8.0 × I 0 -z3 cm ; /~ = 0; 0.01 ; 0.02; 0.03 ; 0.05; 0.1 ; 2a = 0 to 1 × 10 -13 cm. Comparison of calculated values of the total and the differential cross-section with experimental data shows, that 7.5 < r 0 < 8 × 10 -13 cm (closer to 8 × 10 -13 cm). and 2a -~ 1 × 10 -13 cm. Calculated polarization of neutrons reaches values of P -~ 50% for 0 = 1% P ~ 40% for 0 = 2 ° , P -~ 30% for 0 = 3 ° at 1 MeV. These values differ greatly from results of Schwinger, who used in his calculations too crude a picture of nucleus.

Nearly all calculations were made using electronic computers.
