results were interpreted in terms of an oxygen transfer mechanism involving oxidation and reduction of a copper-cupric oxide system.

108. Oxidation of graphite powder in carbon dioxide oxygen and air

K. Seibold (Lonza Ltd., Sins, Switzerland). Oxidation of graphitized coke and anthracite in COZ is only to a small degree chemically controlled even as a fine powder. Reaction rates are increased upon addition of inert gas. The oxidation of powder in oxygen proceeds purely chemical while the reaction rate in air is diffusion controlled.

## Abstract We present a simple NMR method for microscopically exploring the local environment in carbon fibers. The method utilizes __n__‐alkanes as probe molecules, where the __n__‐alkanes penetrate carbon fibers of interest. The high‐resolution ^1^H NMR spectra for a mixture of a carbon fiber an

Carbon nanoclusters, produced from an arc-discharge between graphite electrodes under helium atmosphere , show a rich variety of shapes that reflect a strict discipline of the growth and may ultimately delineate the growth mechanism (Seraphin et al., 1994a). It has been shown for the first time that iron atom positions can be determined inside the framework of zeolite crystals, such as the FAU structure of zeolite Y [Na 48 (Fe 2 O 3 ) 38 ][Al 48- Si 144 O 384 ], by means of electron crystallographic methods for three-dimensional reconstruction from high
