✦ Synopsis
06 Electrical power supply and utilization (economics, policy, supplies, forecasts) (NGDP). Cointegration was established between kWh and, respectively, GDP and NGDP, but not with AGDP. The GC results detect bidirectional causality between kWh and GDP suggesting that kWh and GDP are jointly determined, but one-way causality running from NGDP to kWh. The ECM results detect causality running one-way from GDP (also from NGDP) to kWh suggesting that a permanent rise in GDP may cause a permanent growth in electricity consumption.
04/01888 Cross-subsidy in electricity tariffs: evidence from India
Chattopadhyay, P. Energy Policy, 2004, 32, (5), 673-684. The recent reforms in India have been equated to the reduction of cross-subsidization in electricity tariffs. Examining the usefulness of cross subsidies in electricity tariffs in India, I have argued that they are prone to considerable inefficiencies and should be discontinued. I have also formally examined the viability of above-cost tariffs in the industrial sector to allow subsidized domestic and agricultural consumption. Finally, I have used data from a distribution company in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India to estimate industrial demand for electricity and have found that the policy of cross-subsidy may have indeed gone overboard in India.
