✦ Synopsis

In order to achieve the levels of functionality required in many current engineering systems, information on system status must be provided to the control processor to support decision-making. In the majority of systems there will be a need to monitor a range of motions in both two and three dimensions. The types of motion range from simple translational and rotational movements to the complex two-and three-dimensional paths associated with mobile systems and robots. The paper considers a variety of different types of motion that might be expected within engineering systems and examines the performance and operation of the associated sensors and transducers.
