✦ Synopsis
It is significant that cost-effective and environmental strategies are met in order to use carbonaceous waste products from coal combustion, with the increasing role of coal as a source in 21st century. Accordingly, this paper demonstrates the ability of unburned carbon from coal combustion waste to generate activated carbons by steam activation. Over the next century it is also estimated that non-fuel uses of coal will become more important. In particular, significant growth potential exists for the production of adsorbent carbons with properties of molecular sieves. Owing to the inherent fine structure of Anthracites, they can easily be tailored for this specific purpose.
